The Minister of Education of West Bengal, Bratya Basu stated that admission to undergraduate courses will be done through a centralised process for all the colleges run by the state. However, some of the autonomous and minority institutions have been exempted.
He said that the admission process will begin on June 24 and will be conducted through a common website. This will eliminate the possibility of a student with higher marks to secure admission in multiple colleges at once. The student then accepts one seat in the preferred course and vacates the rest. This results in a lot of seats remaining empty every year.
When the admission is done through the centralised process each student will be given only one seat at a time based on the results. The students will be given the option of a better opportunity if there is a vacancy elsewhere.
Students who have passed the 12th standard across the country can apply for 25 undergraduate courses offered through the website. The system will generate the merit list. He further stated that they are launching a portal to allow the students to choose their desired course in their preferred college using a single window system.
He was asked about the posts of teacher-in-charge being vacant in many colleges. He said that the process of the filing the post has already started.
