One of the traditional South Indian delicacies is Meduvada which is often regarded as the Indian doughnut. It won’t be wrong to say that Meduvada is the Indian and salty version of the doughnut. Also known as vada or popularly served as sambhar vada in rest of India, it is the favourite snacks and breakfast dish of Indians. The basic ingredients include black lentils, rice. However, the stuffed meduvada also include curry leaves, onion and green chillies.

Brief history of Meduvada :
As per Vir Sanghvi, meduvada originates in Maddur town of Karnataka and hence we have the name meduvada. , medu in Kannada means soft and vada means fritter, so it’s a soft fritter. The dish was later made popular in other parts India by Udupi restaurateurs .
What makes Meduvada healthy?
Some of the basic ingredients which make Meduvada cuisine so popular are:
• Black lentils: Black lentils or urad dal is one of the key ingredient of meduvada. This daal is rich in folic acid which is an essential source of brain development. It duly fulfils the daily requirement of folate in the body. It helps in producing new cells. As it is rich in phosphorous, it works better with calcium building bones.
• Rice: Rice is used along with black lentils which is a good source of carbohydrate. It keeps one energetic and active all day long. Fermented rice is good for health than par-boiled or plain rice.
• Coconut: fresh coconut is an ideal source of weight loss. High fibre reduces the cholesterol level of the blood and enhances insulin secretion. It further reduces the blood sugar level.

As meduvadas are prepared using deep frying technique, it is essential to check the type of oil used. Usually, deep fried foods are not good for health and can have adverse impact on your health if consumed on a regular basis. Shallow frying or using olive oil for frying can be a good option. While cooking any meduvada recipe its important that you fry it in hot oil but at lower flame which allows it to cook from within thus allowing even cooking. Since it’s a deep fried dish, one should avoid its consumption on a regular basis.
