He said that for the last 7 decades, the company has had a strong presence and has achieved many milestones. It was established in 1968 under the name ‘Special Steels Private Limited’. In 1979, the company was made a subsidiary of Tata Steel Ltd. GWI became a part of Tata Steel Ltd. in 2002. The company aims to increase its production to 1 Mt by 2030.

Specialised products
● In the automotive industry, the company offers Induction Hardened and Tempered (IHT) wire, which is used to make springs. This wire was otherwise imported. In the IHT 2W/3W suspension sector, the company has a market share of 80%. This led to 90% localisation of the sector.
● For fencing, the company offers two products - 3D weld mesh and knotted fence.
The 3D weld mesh fencing solution is 25% cheaper than the traditional brick wall. It has superior strength, high durability and is aesthetically superior. It is easy to install and its complete impenetrability provides safety to the customers.
Knotted fence is designed to have a ‘Cross-lock’ knot, which helps to improve its strength. It is a superior fencing solution and offers maximum protection. It is also 25% cheaper to use when compared to other fencing solutions.
He further said that by 2030, the global steel wire industry will grow at a CAGR of 5%-6%. The Asia-Pacific countries account for over 40% of the production and consumption of steel wires globally. This is due to the increase in construction activities in India and China and replacement markets in the developed nations.
In the industry, the top 5 manufacturers account for a global production of only 32%. As this trend continues, there are new entrants from both developed and developing countries. The steel wire industry in India was established in 1920. India’s low per capita steel consumption against the global average will lead to the growth of the steel wire industry in India.
