At the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, around 29 international students are pursuing various courses. The institute has implemented special initiatives to increase the number of foreign students studying at the institute.
The institute is actively inviting students from foreign countries to pursue courses in the fields of humanities and social science, engineering, sciences, design, healthcare and medicine, management and interdisciplinary areas.
A Joint Degree PhD Programme (JDP) has been initiated and more courses are going to be offered shortly. This is being done to make IIT Guwahati a global institute of excellence. The institute has been ranked 384 by the QS World University Rankings 2023.
The director of IIT Guwahati, Dr. T. G. Sitharam said that with the rapid internalisation of education, IIT Guwahati will gain a strong foothold across higher education institutes worldwide. It will play a key role in solving challenges associated with global issues. Students will gain quality education and an opportunity to pursue research in a world-class environment.
Special steps taken by the institute
● Foreign students pursuing a PhD programme in a recognised institute and who are officially sponsored by that institute to carry out research work will be accepted as visiting students at IIT, Guwahati. The students can access the laboratory and other facilities for a period not extending two semesters under the MoU.
● Foreign students pursuing a degree in a recognised foreign institute and are sponsored by that institute to carry coursework at IIT, Guwahati will be accepted as exchange students. This is valid for a period not exceeding two semesters as per the MoU.
● Foreign students registered for a UG/PG/PhD course at a recognised institute and are officially sponsored by that institute to carry out project work will be accepted as visiting students under the MoU. The students can avail the laboratory and other facilities at IIT, Guwahati for a period not exceeding two semesters.

● Joint Academic Program (M. Tech) - Food Science and Technology with GIFU University of Japan.
● Joint PhD Program in Mechanical Engineering in partnership with GIFU University of Japan.
● Joint PhD Program in Bioinformatics with Heidelberg University of Germany.
● Collaborative PhD Program in Civil Engineering with the Curtin University of Australia.
● Joint PhD Supervision Program in partnership with Shantou University, China.
● Collaborative PhD Program with the National Institute of Material Science, Japan.
